if i stay in maine over christmas, i hear there is a good chance of snow; but what towns/villages etc are likely candidates? Am I right to assume the further north, the greater the chances of snow? I would like some nice scenery, i have young children anxious to play in the snow, sledge and that sort of thing, but we are looking to rent a vacation home, so i need to think about what the area names are that would be best- most scenic with good chances of snow- to stay in!
snow at christmas?
Further north is a good bet; inland, i.e,, away from the ocean is even a better bet, I think.
snow at christmas?
What%26#39;s the chance of rain in London?
Seriously, over the past few years, there has been a snow drought at christmas in the southern part of the state. So, the further north you are, the better CHANCE you have of seeing snow.
Here are a few suggestions, all of which will require substantial driving:
Rangeley Lakes area
Greenville/Moosehead Lake area
Bethel area (skiing)
Presque Isle/Caribou/ Ft. Kent area (north along the Canadian border
I suggest making sure that there is someting else nearby which would keep you busy.
I%26#39;d also look into the ski resort areas of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. If there isn%26#39;t natural snow and if it%26#39;s cold enough, the ski resorts will be making snow.
Stowe, Vermont is especially nice. Very quintessential New England village with lots of neat places to stay.
Certainly the further north you go the better chance of snow, not just getting snow but moreso that the snow will stay around and not just melt the next day or get followed by rain.
While almost all of Maine sees some snowfall of some sort before Christmas it is never a given that there will be snow on the ground for Christmas and even less likely there will be enough snow to ';play%26#39; in. The farther north you go the more likely to have the snow.
I would second the suggestion that you stay at a ski area like Bethel. There likely will be some snow and like has been said if not they will probably make some snow around that time.
The Carrabassett Valley is a good bet (Kingfield, Statton). If worse came to worse, you could always go to the mountain (Sugarloaf), and it is almost certain that they would have snow because they make it. The scenery is very pretty in that area, too. Not a lot to do, EXCEPT play in the snow, actually. There are some pretty good rentals on the mountain, and a nice cross country ski center, too. Kingfield has a grocery store, gas station, movie rentals, etc. Not too much in Stratton, but it is a funky little town. Kingfield has The Herbert Hotel and some nice bed and breakfasts if the mountain is too pricey. I have a camp in the Valley, so I have been going there for years, and I think it is a lovely area. Like I said, a good bet for snow at that time of year.
Bethel would get my vote over the Carrabassett Valley as the town of Bethel itself is cute, lots of restaurants. At the Carrabassett Valley, you%26#39;re basically just got the ski resort.
Yes, Bethel is cute with lots more ';town'; activities, but if you want snow, the Valley still gets my vote. In the winter, there are good restaurants open, too.
