I am making a trip to see friends in Rhode Island in mid October, and thinking about taking a side trip up to Maine for a few days, seeing the southern coastal areas. Will I totally freeze to death at that time of year on the coast? And I figure that the fall color will be pretty much gone too, is that correct?

I don%26#39;t recall ever seeing an account of anyone freezing to death in October in southern coastal Maine---of course, if you should fall into the Atlantic, hypothermia is a possibility. I suggest that you check out:

At the appropriate places, enter the location you are interested and the range of dates. You will get a text summary of what to expect, plus a wealth of historical weather data.
Because of the moderating effect of the ocean, fall foliage tends to develop later along the coast than inland. Depending on the weather, you might still see decent fall color.

maybe I should tell you I%26#39;m a southern girl, so I have thin blood. Does that explain it?? : )
And thanks for the web site. I%26#39;ll take a look.
Maybe you should give Maine a pass in mid-October. The color will indeed be gone on the southern coast of Maine. It could get very chilly. Last night, July 9th, the temperature dipped down to 44 degrees here in Bar Harbor. It will surely dip into the 20s at night by mid-October. When in doubt, stay below the Mason Dixon line.
I don%26#39;t totally agree with bonniemaev. Mid-October days can be quite warm and the south of Maine will probably still have some color. Check this website near the time you are considering for color info.
