Boothbay Harbor Lodging?

Hi -

I am planning a trip in August to the east coast and we will be spending two nights in Boothbay Harbor. I was wondering how many people think it is better to stay in town at a hotel like the Tugboat Inn or Brown%26#39;s Wharf versus staying at the Ocean Gate Inn on Southport Island. FYI - we are a married couple in their mid thirties with no children.

I appreciate any help you can give.

Thanks!

Boothbay Harbor Lodging?

Hi!

I was born and raised in Maine and now live in NY. I spent a lot of time in Boothbay Harbor as a child and an adult. 99% of the time we stayed at Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf Inn right in town. They have valet parking and balconies overlooking the harbor. I%26#39;ve taken fellow teachers there and they%26#39;ve loved it. Bob at the front desk is friendly and helpful, the valet staff are equally friendly and careful w/your car. By staying there you are in the middle of town and won%26#39;t have to pay or struggle for parking. If you decide to stay there ask for a room facing the outer harbor.

You must take the sunset cruise on the Eastwind. Take a bottle of wine, corkscrew and glasses. Very relaxing!

A few years had past since I had taken my fellow teachers to Boothbay and when we went last year I thought I heard a familar voice. It was one of the valet guys (young) and when I spoke to him, he remembered me right away and said ';Hey, you%26#39;rer one of the NY teachers! Where%26#39;ve you been?'; How often does that happen?

Anyway hope this was helpful. Enjoy your trip!

Hello, I go to Boothbay Harbor 2 time a year in the summer. You are better off stay in Boothbay Harbor. You%26#39;ll have more to see and do.

If you are dying for privacy and want something more secluded, go for it.

But maybe not at the Ocean Gate. I was on Southport Island this past weekend. Curious about the Ocean Gate, I drove thru the grounds. The exterior is sorta dumpy looking, not too impressive.

If you don%26#39;t want to be in town, I bet you could find something else in the outlying areas that is a wee more impressive.

Hi All -

Thanks for your comments.

Michele, I am so glad you drove through the grounds recently, it really helped in making my decision.

I really appreciate everyone taking the time to answer my questions.

We also go to Boothbay in August , this will be our 3rd year. I would suggest staying at the Ocean Gate in , rather than in town. The reason it is much more peaceful and romantic. The tugboat is right in the middle of the harbor area, the food is good though at the Tugboat. The harbor area is about 10-15 min from Ocean Gate and there is plenty of parking. We have never stayed at the Ocean Gate but it looks very nice. We stay at the Flagship Inn which is right over the hill from the harbor area, 2 min drive, but we have a teen and 11 year old, so romance and quiteness we do not get. Have a great time!!!

If you only have two nights, stay in town and enjoy waking up to the harbor. None of the motels are beautiful(although the tugboat inn is advertising a complete re-do, but the view of the harbor, walking distance to shops and boats make up for this. In season prices are ';in season'; prices so don%26#39;t expect a break.

The Ocean Gate feels like ';camp'; but is great for kids(above responder take note) and rooms are comfortable and breakfast is included, but you can%26#39;t walk to town.

There are some nice inns in town(rather than motels) and some have good views of the harbor and give you a slightly more New England experience.

we are planning on going to boothbay in Agust with our two teenage daughters..would you all suggest Tugboat Inn,

Fishermans Warf or Browns? Can we make it to boothbay in a few hours from boston? How far is Camden from BBH?

I%26#39;m a big fan of the Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf. It%26#39;s in the middle of town. Not sure on the distance to Camden - you can probably find out on line.

Hi dmwojnar and others asking about accomodations in BBH,

Depending on what you%26#39;re objectives are, there is a hotel/motel/B%26amp;B/Inn for everyone%26#39;s price range and taste :). Check out www.boothbayharbor.com which is the local Chamber%26#39;s site and has tons of info on just about everything in BBH.

If you want to stay in town; not have to deal with parking; and be able to walk everywhere and have a view of the harbor, there%26#39;s Fisherman%26#39;s (never stayed there); the Tugboat (stayed there and it%26#39;s nice, nothing great; however the location is wonderful); then the Rocktide and Brown%26#39;s on the east side which are about a 10 to 15 minute walk to town or you could take their trolleys that run all day.

For Inn%26#39;s with a view there%26#39;s the Admirals Quarters which is wonderful. I%26#39;ve stayed there a few times years ago. It%26#39;s across the street from the water but sits up high and has great views of the inner and out harbor and a couple of lighthouses. Breakfast is excellent.

Right next to the Admiral%26#39;s Quarters is the Greenleaf Inn. I recently toured it while passing out flyers for an upcoming even t I was associated with and it was very nice; homey and comfortable. And the Innkeeper was a real gem.

Then there%26#39;s the Topside and Welch House, both nice Inns with fabulous views. However, these are located up a very steep street and if you%26#39;re not in good shape, that could be a problem. But that%26#39;s what gives them their spectacular views and sunsets. Both are very nice inside, comfy, homey and welcoming.

I agree about the Ocean Gate Inn. I drove around the property about 2 years ago and it was in kind of bad shape. Maybe they%26#39;ve renovated since and if they have and you want to be away from it all, then it might be nice.

But I can definitely think of better accomodations that are most likely in the same price range i.e. the Ocean Pt. Inn, Newagen Inn, or Lawnmeer Inn. All three have great locations, about 10 to 15 minutes from town. But the Ocean Pt Inn and the Newagen Inn have pools and other amenities that make them more special.

In any case, good luck to all of you looking for the perfect accomodation in BBH. And don%26#39;t forget to report back and let us know how your visit went :).
