Boston to Surry will take you about five hours. Is there a reason you listed Livermore Falls? I ask because it is not on the ';normal'; route.

What time will you be leaving Boston?

I want to stop at the Washburn-Norlands living history museum on our way back to Boston form Surry. We thought we%26#39;d drive straight thru on a coastal route to Surry and then spend two days going back to Logan airport with overnights in LIvermore Falls (if anything lodging can be found near there) and Portland on the way back.

Is this your first time up the coast? I would be happy to help with any questions you have. I grew up near Surry and am familiar with the area. I have only been to Livermore Falls once, so I can%26#39;t be of much help there.

Thanks. Yes, this is our first time to Maine. We%26#39;ll be staying with friends in Surry so I think we;ve got that covered -- although they just moved to the area from Vermont a year ago. Do you have any recommendations on a stopping point during the drive from Boston to Surry? Everyone says to stop in Freeport at LL Bean but we don%26#39;t have an overwhelming need to shop. We wan%26#39;t to take '; learning and eating'; breaks. I figure we%26#39;ll leave Logan airport at about noon. Our goal would be to arrive in Surry by 9:30 or 10.

That should be plenty of time. Freeport is a pure shopping town. I don%26#39;t think there is any other reason to go there.

Portland is 1.5 hours from Boston. From there you have a few main options.

Except for a few exceptions, US 1 (';the coastal route';) itself is not particularly scenic. The pretty views lie mostly on the roads which meander along the undulating coastline. Invest in a good map, AAA for example.

There are some combinations of driving you might want to consider which would present both rural Maine and coastal views.

Interstate 95 to Augusta, then Route 17 to Rockland, then Route 1 onwards. OR, Route 3 from Augusta to Belfast, then Route 1.

Augusta is about 3 hours from Boston and has a few motels to choose from, and lots of chain restaurants.

When are you going and do you have any specific interests?
