We are traveling to Bar Harbor with our four year old daughter and would like suggestions on things to do with her in town and at Acadia. Thanks
Bar Harbor with a four year old
My family went to Bar Harbor every year when I was little. Things I loved: Sand beach (in the park - water is very cold though), finding sea creatures in the tide pools and climbing around on the rocks (i.e. just about any nearby beach), hiking, and shopping for tchochkes (there%26#39;s a huge tourist emporium right in the center of town with everything plastic and stamped with ';Bar Harbor'; - may not be YOUR thing, though). I was pretty impressed with Thunder Hole in the park, although that depends on the weather and you may want to keep a close eye on your daughter.
They have windjammer cruises and I%26#39;m pretty sure ';working lobsterman'; cruises that I never did but that would be a lot of fun for a little kid. They%26#39;re pretty short, too.
Bar Harbor with a four year old
Started taking our daughter to Acadia/Bar Harbor when she was 8 months old; she%26#39;s now 22. There are a number of really good hikes that a 4 year old can do and would love, especially if it%26#39;s blueberry season! Bring a container! Wonderland, Ship Harbor, Compass Harbor, Little Long Pond, Seawall, Sand Beach, Echo Lake are all good for kids. Downtown on (I think) Monday%26#39;s and Thursdays there are concerts on the green which kids love! Bar Harbor is fun. The Oceanarium is a lot of fun and hands on for kids. Any tidal pool will keep a 4 year old occupied for a while. Hunter Beach and Little Hunter beach are good also.
Take her up Cadillac Mountain, either hike or drive, and let her run around on the pink granite ledges. Don%26#39;t worry, she won%26#39;t fall off! Another recommendation is to go off the island and travel one peninsula to the east, to Schodic Point. This is also a part of the national park, but in the town of Winter Harbor. Here you can get wet watching the unbroken waves crash on the rocks. And be sure to bring a loaf of bread to hand feed the seagulls. My children loved that.
We%26#39;ve just come back from visiting Bar Harbor with our 3 and 5 year old boys. Sand Beach was our absolute favourite part of the trip, and I wish we had had more time for Acadia National Park. We could have easily spent a full day there.
We also had fun with Pirate Cove mini-putt, and on a lobster fishing and seal watching tour. In the end, I wish we had tried the Lulu Lobster tour... sounds like it was terrific.
I%26#39;m currently blogging our experience at …blogspot.com/search/…202007 if you%26#39;d like to see more of our experiences.
Can you give us some info about what kind of activities you like to do? Recommendations can vary greatly depending on your preferred level of activity.
We just came back from BH and Acadia and we did plenty of hiking with our 4yo. There are many trails that are kid-friendly.
One activity that I recommend is Diver Ed. He is very kid-friendly and even us grown-ups enjoyed him. He has a great sense of humor and our kids had a great time.
